BERLIN: Ich bin Berliner!!

When I’m traveling, I reject all technology. But there is a downside because I can’t seem to come across a computer that will allow me to upload photos!! It’s too bad because Berlin was absolutely beautiful!

The city is so diverse. There is the West Berlin with the beautiful architecture and intricate little streets. Hop on the underground and arrive at East Berlin, and the architecture immediately changes. It’s grander, simpler, more Neoclassic, reflecting in history Communist rule and some tough times in the past.

I really recommend going to the Wall Documentation Center where the original Berlin Wall is still erected. Standing on that one street, on the right side was West Berlin with its prosperity and freedom, and on the left side was everything in the opposite. One street, one concrete wall made a world of difference.

It’s difficult not to immerse into the Berlin culture quickly, the city is completely irresistable. I quickly learned how to order a coffee (einen Kaffee) and hot chocolate (heiße schokolade). But things can get amusing sometimes: “Wetter” is actually “weather” in English, and “drücken” is not “drunken” but “to push” in German.

HOSTEL REVIEW
Wombat’s City Hostel Berlin
Alte Schönhauser Strasse 2, Berlin, Germany
Room: 6-bed female dorm
Price: 12 euros/night

Rating on Hostelworld: 91%
One of the best hostels I stayed in.

Character:
The character is homey with a cozy common area with bean bag chairs. Rooms were big with common table. The Wombar has a nightview towards the Berlin Tower. I felt really at home.

Security: Advanced. One key card opens your room door and locker door. At night, I needed to open the main entrance with my key card, which means they are careful about letting outsiders in. The neighborhood is very safe at night, I felt safe even when walking alone.

Location: Superb location, anyone would be sold just by the location. 1 min from the metro stop, 5-10 min walk to Alexanderplatz (the main square with the Berlin Tower). It’s close to an area called Hackescher Markt with many original designer shops and good restaurants. In fact, there are many highly rated restaurants right underneath the hostel. Just walk across the street. It is absolutely superb.

Cleanliness: Always, always clean. That’s from someone who is constantly blamed for being germ phobic.
